To paraphrase the politician Rick Perry, there are 3 reasons I almost didn’t write this preview, and I forget the 3rd one.
The #1 reason was simple prudence. Prior to the Team USA Under-20 squad whipping Nigeria 2-0, it was uncertain whether the young Yanks would even have a place in the tournament beyond a quick, woeful elimination in group stage. Of course the team’s fate for the upcoming FIFA knock-out phase is still anything but assured as we stand.
But a loss to the African side would have meant that the United States could hardly hope to qualify out of Group D, making Matchday 3 against Team Qatar in the FIFA U20 World Cup a matter of future trivia and little year for Team USA supporters.
